My teaser today comes from page 95 of American Rust by Philipp Meyer, a powerful book sent to me by Random House for a TLC Book Tour, which kicks off today on The Blue Stocking Society with a giveaway to celebrate the trade paperback release!

The first two random pages I picked didn’t work out- the book is told in sort of a stream of consciousness style and the first one just would not have made any sense, while the second one contained the “f” word.  In keeping with my blog’s PG rating, I thought it would be best to keep looking!  So here’s my third random teaser-

“She pulled in next to the trailer and there she was, his mother, dressed for church and him standing in his underpants in the driveway, nearly one o’clock in the afternoon.  She shook her head, but not in a friendly way.”

This book has commanded my attention in a way I haven’t been grabbed by a book in ages..

My teaser comes from page 51 of When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka.  At 144 pages this is a minimalist story told by a young boy about his Japanese American family during WWII, when they are split up and sent to the internment camps.

My (step) grandparents were children during WWII and went to the camps with their families, so I have a personal interest in these kinds of stories.  I’m pre-reading this one to see if it would be ok for my 12 year old daughter to read.  So far, so good.  Here’s the teaser, from page 51:

“There was a window above the boy’s bed, and outside were the stars and the moon and the endless rows of black barracks all lined up in the sand.  In the distance, a wide empty field where nothing but sagebrush grew, then the fence and the high wooden towers.”

Today’s teaser comes from page 65 of Who by Fire by Diana Spechler.

“I can explain what I felt that night only by comparing the experience to a far lesser one:  Once, a few years ago, Bits and I started talking about old TV shows, and she asked, “What was the name of Alice’s boyfriend in The Brady Bunch?”  Neither of us could remember.”

I can’t remember either.  Bonus points if you know the answer (without Googling it!)

My teaser comes from page 165 of Lottery by Patricia Wood, my book club’s pick for September (we will be talking to the author from her home in Hawaii by speaker phone!).  The book is about a mentally challenged young man who wins 12 million in the Washington State Lottery, which doesn’t change him at all but has a bizarre effect on everyone around him.  This scene shows him getting ripped off by a mechanic, something my husband thinks will happen to me if I dare to be the one to take the car in for service.

“I pull my checkbook out of my back pocket and write Marty a check for one thousand one hundred three dollars and seventy-three cents for parts and labor.  He has to help me with the zeros.”

What is the first big-ticket item you would spend money on if you won 12 million dollars?  Do NOT say ‘pay bills’ or ‘the kids’ college fund’.  For me, it would be a pool!

My teaser comes from page 177 of  Life of Pi by Yann Martel, which happens to be my face-to-face book club’s selection for August.  I’m going to miss this meeting due to our family’s annual trip to Pennsylvania, so it’s tempting to skip the book, but because a couple people in our club are passionate about it (Hello, Sheri!), I may give it a go.  

“The stars shone with such fierce, contained brilliance that it seemed absurd to call the night dark.  The sea lay quietly, bathed in a shy, light-footed light, a dancing play of black and silver that extended without limits all about me.”

Ahhhh, sounds beautiful.

My teaser comes from The Red Tent by Anita Diamant,  page 65.

“My mother told me that after the birth of her twin sons, she decided to finish with childbearing.  Her breasts were those of an old woman, her belly was slack, and her back ached every morning.”

I’m just starting this book today but I’ve had it in the stack for a year and a half.  I’m really excited to start it.

My teaser comes from a book that will be on tour with TLC Book Tours beginning in June called Beach Trip by Cathy Holton.  Beach Trip is also the June selection for our Summer Reading Series.  The teaser comes from page 43 in my advance uncorrected proof but may be different in the finished book.  This is a fun read so far!

“Everyone was always going on and on about passion, but Annie could see how passion might really screw up your life.  It might keep you from thinking clearly.  It might make you do things you’d later regret.”

This character Annie is an uptight neat-freak perfectionist.  This part of the book is when she is in college, mopping the kitchen floor, and gazing out the window at her roommate who is sitting in the sun making out with her boyfriend.  Annie, Annie, Annie- you’re 21, a senior in college, it’s a warm spring day- throw down that mop and go have some fun!

My teaser comes from a book I swore I would never read from an author I don’t really like.  Or didn’t like, before this book.  Anyway!   Kids- you should never swear not to do something.  You might change your mind.

The book is Truth & Beauty by Ann Patchett, about the author’s friendship with Lucy Grealy, the late author of a book I loved, Autobiography of a Face.  I’m reading this book because I want to feel close to Lucy again, not because I like Ann Patchett.  Because I don’t.  Or didn’t.  (Actually, the jury is still out.  I’ve only read 65 pages.)  But already I’m starting to feel like she’s writing about someone else, not Lucy.  Not the Lucy in my mind, the one I fell in love with in Autobiography of a Face, but someone much more one dimensional and juvenile.  It’s such a different view.

“Having Lucy in my apartment those weeks was not unlike having a couple of those revved-up cats from the Scottish Cat Protection League.  She ran all over the place, left my clothes tossed over lampshades, wet towels heaped under pillows, bowls of Cream of Wheat minus three bites in whatever spot I was most likely to step in them.”

My teaser comes from a book I picked up over the weekend at the Festival of Books, The Story of a Marriage by Andrew Sean Greer.  This book was one of the first picks for the new Picador Book Club on Twitter.  I love the concept of a book club all done in Tweets!   Picador is announcing a new book today for the club, so go check it out!
