The Sunday Salon: January 17, 2010

Good morning!  I hope it’s bright and sunny where you are!

In  Southern California we are bracing ourselves for a MAJOR WINTER STORM!  Take cover!  There may be some rain!  I might not be laughing about this a week from now, but when the weather forecasters cry wolf a few times, and the major storm ends up being a few sprinkles.. well, let’s say I’m a bit unimpressed with the warnings.  We’ll see.  Right now it’s sunny, the sky is a brilliant blue, and the only clouds I see are high and fluffy.  But they are moving pretty fast, so.. hmmm.

Today was supposed to be our parent/child book club meeting day, hosted by me, but my oldest has strep throat.  I almost made her go to school on Friday (another one who’s always crying wolf) but she seemed a little warm and listless and had a miserable attitude so I let her stay home.  Later I saw that her throat was inflamed so we went to the doctor.. he said it was viral and to go home and give her Motrin.  But then last night she spiked a high fever and her throat was bright red, so we ended up in the ER for several hours, and she got a shot of penicillin.  Now my husband has a sore throat.  Good times!

I’ve spent some time this morning going through our pictures for Sheri from A Novel Menagerie’s Beautiful Baby pet photo contest.  We have so many that it’s hard to decide what to submit.  She’s having consolation prizes for most humorous and best personality so I’m thinking of entering one of these, rather than the standard “beauty” shot.. tell me what you think:

Where is everybody? Who wants to play with me?

What's THIS? A new pet in the house?

Well, she smells pretty good. Maybe we can be friends.

As for reading, I’m about 2/3rds of the way through both U is for Undertow and American Rust.  I’m usually a one book at a time woman, but I’d left “U” in my car one night and didn’t feel like going out to get it, so I started American Rust and haven’t put it down since. Wish I had a team of people to raise my children, make my meals, do my laundry, clean my house, and shop for me so I could just read read read in my free time.  Wait..I need another me!  I need a wife!! Ha Ha.

What are you reading this weekend?  I hope you all have a wonderful day and a great week!  Thanks for stopping by Books On The Brain.

  1. Oh, I remember strep throat! Our son used to get it all the time. A shot didn’t knock it out for him – it came back after he had one – so watch her.

I’m thinking of entering Sherri’s contest, too, so I don’t want to comment on your pictures.

  2. I’m all for having a team of people run my house. 🙂 I’m sorry to hear that there is sickness in your family though. I hope everyone is better soon!

I love the photos (especially the last one)! Very cute!

  3. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of those shots. How fun! Good luck with the winter storm and the contest!

  4. What cute pics! I know what you mean–I could use a “wife”, too! Would love to be able to spend the day reading!

  5. I LOVE that last one! So sweet.

  6. I was laughing at my coworkers on Friday who were all freaked out and convinced we were going to get 20 inches of rain. Get real.

    It’s currently sprinkling.

  7. Love these pictures! Too cute!

  8. My Cooper and your pup could be twins! Too cute.

Hope that strep doesn’t spread any farther in your household.

  9. I love the photos! LOL So adorable.

I am looking forward to the rain. I read an article on the local paper’s website yesterday stating that the county’s fire department is preparing for possible flooding. I guess it’s supposed to be bad. Like you though, I’ve heard it before and it hasn’t panned out. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I hope your daughter will be feeling better soon–and that your husband has caught the strep throat. Something’s going around my office right now and I’m praying I don’t catch it.

I hope you have a great week, Lisa.

  10. Deanna had it this week. I hope your troops feel better soon! I am glad that you’re entering the contest!

  11. […] Lisa mentioned in her post today, we are bracing for torrential rains this week.  I’m so excited!  We live in an irrigated […]

  12. I know you’ve all been dry, so I am happy you’ll get rain. Just don’t go and float away on us now!

Those pictures are precious. Is that a guinea pig? I like the middle one. We’ve got one cat that is attached to our guinea pig.

Hope you have a great week. Get everyone healthy and stay dry!

  13. Oh I love that third picture! I hope you guys get just enough rain to get things good and wet but not so much that you wash down the hills!

  14. We’ve had rain most of the day. I’ll probably be sick of it by Thursday – and my dog hates it – but I’m trying to appreciate it :-).

I’ll be reading AMERICAN RUST next. Right now I’m quite caught up in SHANGHAI GIRLS.

Like Kathy, I won’t comment on the pictures, because my dog may end up being a competitor of yours.

Hope those germs get out of your house soon, Lisa!

  15. You guys act like we do when we are bracing for a snowstorm! Hope it’s not too bad. I don’t understand why docs don’t just do strep tests while you’re in the office…it is worth it! I always push and when my son has strep he has no sore throat, just a stomach ache and body aches…very weird symptoms. Hope that your daughter is improving. I’m reading U is for Undertow and am about as far as you…it’s a bit choppy and I hope the story all comes together at the end.

  16. I forgot to mention that the pics are adorable of your pets! I love the last two!

  17. LOVE the photos. Especially the last one ~ so sweet.

  18. Well it poured all day yesterday for me and it’s pouring now so I think the weather analysts are right on this time. I like a steady rain but this downpour stuff is for the birds.

I am reading several books right now. I am almost done with The Hunger Games. I finished The Things that Keep us Here. I am reading Moby Dick for the read-along and Case Histories for my book club. I am also reading The Awakening. I don’t know why I do this to myself.

  19. Those pictures are absolutely precious and should win some kind of contest! Hope your family is feeling better soon. P.S. I’m in Northern California and things are pretty stormy (by California standards) today. Hopefully you guys down south will escape the worst of it!

  20. Hope your daughter is feeling better; strep is awful.

Those last two pics are just great! I like both. Don’t think I could pick.

  21. I hope your family is feeling better soon! I have to say that I hope you have better luck with American Rust than I did. I hated that book so much and couldn’t even finish it. I felt that the women characters were really poorly developed and that their numerous sexual motivations didn’t ring true. I will be interested in hearing what you think of it when you get done~!

  22. Aww, I’m sorry to hear about the kiddo with strep. I had it when I was 21, and I thought I was literally going to die. I’ve never been so sick and miserable in my life. I’ve had a few scares since then but no recurring cases.

I didn’t get a bit of reading done yesterday (Sunday), but I’m hoping for a successful Monday afternoon. I’m behind and late for the Woolf in Winter readalong of Mrs. Dalloway!

  23. I LOVE the third pic! That expression is sooo cute. I have a sample of American Rust on my Kindle and hope to get to it before summer. Maybe it will be a book club pick? I started reading THE RECIPE CLUB over the weekend. It’s okay and a quick read. The book is made up of letters and recipes and since it’s letter, recipe, letter, recipe, it moves quickly. I just finished reading THE HELP for my book club and wanted to read something this week before we meet to discuss and learn our next book on Sunday.
What do you like so much about AMERICAN RUST?

  24. I really like the 2nd and 3rd photos. Good luck. I entered Charlee too.
