My youngest daughter, Kelly, and her BFF have the kind of effortless friendship that I always wished I would find as a kid, but never quite did. They’ve known each other since they were babies and their time together is filled with laughter, inside jokes, imaginative ideas, and non stop conversation. They make their own fun and don’t need to be entertained. I love listening to them talk and laugh- they are hilarious. Last Saturday, as they played on the beach, I read Joy for Beginners by Erica Bauermeister in between watching my daughter’s joy at being with her friend.

I know, right? They don’t really understand what a treasure they have in each other, but someday they will.
Your daughter and her friend are very fortunate to have each other. It took me until my college years to understand the importance of a friendship like theirs. My mother and her siblings grew up with a skewed idea of friendship and almost a fear of it which they passed on to their kids. It took me a while, but I’m glad I finally realized my mom was mistaken in feeling this way. It’s just a matter of connecting with the right person!
Good for your daughter they she’s discovered at a young age the wonder and beauty of a best friend!

Thanks, Amy. My mom has a similar distrust of people and didn’t model female friendship for me very well as I was growing up. I had friends but not the kind of daily closeness and deep understanding these two have.

Long friendships are great – I hope they stay friends as long as me and my friend – we met when we were 7 (so many years ago) in Brownies together and have remained friends ever since.
We moved a few times when I was little so I had to start over a few times, which was hard. I never developed the kind of life long friendships I hope my kids will enjoy. That’s so great that you’ve remained close with your friend from Brownies!!
That is a wonderful kind of friendship. I wish I could have kept that as I grew older but my family moved right before high school and in the (old) days before facebook and text messaging it was almost impossible not to drift apart from those friends.
Facebook and texting would have helped me to keep in touch with childhood friends when I moved to CA years ago- too bad it didn’t exist yet!!
I took my daughter and a couple of her friends out for dinner the other night…I was amazed at how much fun they can have doing the simplest things…just enjoying each other’s company and taking advantage of all the opportunities to create fun. Adults could learn something from young friendships, don’t you think?
I agree, Patti. Perhaps those adults have not had good friendship modelled for them. There’s a special trust that builds between friends.
I’ve been fortunate to keep my friendships going from childhood, but I agree that when one moves away, it would be hard to keep in touch, especially if one is not inclined to pick up the telephone or write letters.

Those are the best kinds of friendships. I had that with my best friend when growing up. We still keep in touch…but it’s a lot harder now that we live so far apart. Great pictures!

Me too. I think they will. I can’t imagine them ever having a fight, they are both so forgiving and easygoing.
It’s so good to have a friend like that. I have one that I recently got connected to again after many years, and it’s been a blessing in my life. I hope the two of them stay together for a long, long time.
Congrats on reconnecting with your friend! I was ‘found’ by a childhood friend online last year but we discovered we didn’t really have anything in common anymore. After a couple of catchup emails we didn’t really have anything left to say. Sad.

Love it Lisa! I had a very good friend named Leah when I was little, but she moved away and I’ve unfortunately have never been able to reconnect with her. But, when picking out a name for my oldest daughter I named her Leah as I have such fond memories of her as a little kid.

Growing up, I always had a best friend. Every few years or so, I’d make a new best friend. Now that I’m older and busier, I have good friends, but not a best friend.

Nothing quite like a best friend! So glad your daughter has found a BBF. Since our move last August from NY to the DC area, my daughter has not made that kind of connection. Lots of “friends” but no best friend yet. Maybe this summer at the pool and tennis courts. 🙂
